The Long Hall

South Great Georges Street

If you're doing the Classic Dublin Pub trail, then The Long Hall on George's Street is a must. I'm not sure if it's mentioned by Joyce, though I suspect it is, but is certainly features on the ubiquitous Dublin Pubs poster (on sale in all of those pubs which are featured) and also in Harry Kernoff's famous painting "A Bird Never Flew On One Wing". You'll find it in every tourist tome from Fodor's to the Rough Guide, both online and offline.

All of which might lead you to expect a tourist trap, with T-shirts for sale and accents of all colours and tongues except authentic Dub. Be pleasantly surprised; this is the genuine article, a beautifully preserved Victorian pub with a rich ceiling of deep red embossed oak. The clock behind the bar, declaring "Correct time", is alone an antique to be cherished.

The clientele is largely local and mixed, including on the last night I was there the obligatory "character", who was dealt with with exemplary professionalism by the young bar person on duty, clearing the way fro the rest of us to enjoy the unique ambience of what is a unique pub.

The Long Hall should be on any list of pubs to visit in Dublin.
